UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The No. 12/12 Penn State women's ice hockey team edged LIU in a non-conference matchup defeating the Sharks 4-3 on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period off a power-play goal by Kiara Zanon with 4:07 left in the period followed by a goal by Alyssa Machado with 54 seconds remaining to take the two-goal advantage.
- LIU responded early in the second period with a power-play goal by Jeannie Wallner with 18:02 remaining to narrow the Penn State lead to 2-1.
- The Nittany Lions answered with a goal six minutes later by Kiara Zanon for her second of the game to give Penn State a 3-1 lead.
- With 9:43 remaining, LIU ended the period with goal off the stick off Stella Scott to make the score 3-2 in favor of Penn State.
- LIU tied the game up at 3-3 in the third period off a penalty shot goal from Wallner off an interference penalty near the net to result in the penalty shot opportunity.
- Tessa Janecke nailed the game-winner with 2:07 remaining in the game off feeds by Izzy Heminger and Lyndie Lobdell to secure the 4-3 victory.
GOALTENDING
- Goalie Josie Bothun stopped 17 shots on 20 attempted to capture her 13th win of the season.
GAME NOTES AND STATS
- Kiara Zanon's three-point night led the Nittany Lions in points and marks her at 98 career-points.
- Izzy Heminger tallied her third straight multi-point game.
- Alyssa Machado scored her second goal in three games.
- Penn State fired 64 shots on goal which is tied for third most in a single game in program history.
