UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 12/11 Penn State women's ice hockey team hits the road for the first time in seven games as they travel to Erie, Pa. to face CHA rival Mercyhurst starting Sunday, January 22 at 5 p.m.

HISTORY

  • This will be the 47th meeting between the two teams as the Lakers lead the series 24-11-9 with the Lakers taking the last game on November 5, 2022, 3-1.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS

  • Leading the way for the Lakers is Thea Johansson with 11 goals and 16 assists.
  • Mercyhurst enters the series with a 13-11-0 overall record and 5-1-0 record in the CHA.
  • The Lakers are coming off a pair of wins against Lindenwood on Jan. 13-14 in which they won 4-3 and 3-2.
  • The Lakers have won their last four games sweeping Lindenwood and Post. 
  • In net for the Lakers stands Jada Brenon who has played 10 games this season and has a record of 5-2-0 and GAA of 1.57. 

BOTHUN BREAKS HISTORY

  • Junior goalie Josie Bothun played in her 76th career game in the Nittany Lions 4-3 victory against LIU.
  • Bothun surpassed Hannah Ehresmann as the program leader in goaltender games played.
  • On the season, Bothun has captured 14 wins with a GAA of 2.04 and save percentage of .918.
  • She was recently named to the HCA Women's Hockey Goalie of the Year "Watch List".

WORKING TO PREVENT HUNGER

  • Away from the ice, the Nittany Lions found some time at the YMACAOCC Anti-Hunger Program and helped fill food orders for 425 families and helped feed over 1,000 children over the weekend. 

JANECKE WINS THE FACEOFF

  • Freshman Tessa Janecke currently sits seventh in the nation in faceoff wins.
  • The Orangeville, Ill. native has won 293 faceoffs this season in 471 attempts which puts her at a 62.2%-win percentage.
  • On the year, she sits second on the team in points with 30 and has 15 goals with 15 assists.

SITTING ON TOP OF THE POLLS

  • Penn State has been ranked in the top 15 in the USA Today/USA Hockey national polls for 17 of the 18 weeks this year.
  • The Nittany Lions stayed in the #12 slot in the USCHO poll.

ZANON HITS 100

  • Junior forward Kiara Zanon captured her 100th career point against RIT on Friday night with her first goal of the game.
  • Her 100th point marks Zanon as the fastest Nittany Lion in program history to do so.
  • She is also the first Nittany Lion in program history to score two short-handed goals in one game.
  • The Fairport, N.Y. native currently leads the Nittany Lions with 34 points off 17 goals and 17 assists. Zanon was named CHA Forward of the Week for her play against RIT.

JANECKE NAMED HCA NATIONAL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH

  • Forward Tessa Janecke was named the Hockey Commissioner's Association (HCA) women's hockey National Rookie of the Month for December as announced Wednesday afternoon. 
  • Janecke becomes the third Nittany Lion ever to win a national player of the month award after Kiara Zanon and Josie Bothun each received an honor in 2020 and 2021. 
  • The Orangeville, Ill. native tallied three goals with six assists for nine points during the month of December. She nailed the game winner alongside one power-play goal.
  • Janecke has gathered four CHA Rookie of the Week honors as well as two CHA Rookie of the Month nods (Sept. and Dec.).
  • On the year, Janecke sits second on the team in points with 27 coming off 14 goals and 13 assists.
  • Kiara Zanon was a runner up for national forward of the month as she tallied 7 goals with three assists for 10 points in four games in December.
