ERIE, Pa.- The No. 12/11 ranked Penn State women's ice hockey team downed Mercyhurst 5-2 on Sunday night in game one of the two-game set.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 7:27 into the opening period, the Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a goal by Vanessa Upson on the power-play.
- The Nittany Lions countered in the closing minutes of the period as Julie Gough scored on the five on three power-play to even the score at 1-1.
- Then 1:22 in the second period, Kiara Zanon fired her first goal of the game on the power-play off assists by Kendall Butze and Izzy Heminger to put the Nittany Lions ahead 2-1.
- In the third period, Gough found the back of the net for the second time of the night to put Penn State ahead 3-1 8:50 into the frame.
- Mercyhurst narrowed the Nittany Lions lead 13:33 into the third off a goal by Thea Johansson to cut the Penn State lead to 3-2.
- The Nittany Lions then scored two goals first coming off the stick of Olivia Wallin 18:40 into the period followed by an empty net goal by Kiara Zanon to secure the 5-2 victory.
GOALTENDING
- Goalie Josie Bothun stopped 16 shots on 18 shots and allowed two goals.
GAME NOTES AND STATS
- Kiara Zanon tallied her 11th multi-point game with two goals and one assist.
- Julie Gough also tallied a three point night featuring two goals and one assist.
- Nine Nittany Lions contributed points in the victory.
- Josie Bothun captured her 50th career win.
