UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's basketball graduate student Andrew Funk has been named to the 2023 Academic All-District Men's Basketball Team, which recognizes that nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC).
Academic All-District honorees now advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in mid-March. To earn Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
Funk is completing an extensive one-year master's degree program at Penn State in management and organizational leadership in which he owns a stellar 3.83 grade point average. The Warrington, Pa. native earned his undergraduate degree from Bucknell in May 2022, graduating with a 3.62 cumulative GPA in his accounting and financial management major.
Funk leads the Big Ten and ranks in the top 20 in the nation with 3.0 three-pointers made per game this season. His 41.2% three-point shooting percentage ranks second in the Big Ten, behind only teammate Seth Lundy, and is a top 40 mark nationally. The guard has started all 27 games for the Nittany Lions this year and ranks third on the team with 12.6 points per game. Funk has scored in double figures in 19 games, including 10 of the last 11 contests, and has produced six 20-point efforts. His 44.5 FG% and 41.2 3FG% this season are both career highs.
Funk owns impressive career marks of 1,569 points and 272 three-pointers through four seasons at Bucknell and one at Penn State.
Funk earns his second-career Academic All-District award after also earning the recognition during his senior season at Bucknell. He was also the 2022 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a three-time Patriot League All-Academic Team member for the Bison.
Funk and the Nittany Lions return to action Thursday evening when Penn State travels to Ohio State for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff on FS1.
