No. 10 Women's Hockey NCAA Tournament Run Ends With 3-2 3OT Loss to No. 8 Quinnipiac

COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The 10th-ranked Penn State women's ice team fought hard till the last minute but fell to eighth-ranked Quinnipiac 3-2 in three overtimes in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Quinnipiac jumped out to a 1-0 lead 4:57 into the first period off a goal by Shay Maloney.
  • The Nittany Lions responded with a pair of goals in the second frame coming off the sticks of Kiara Zanon 13:31 into the period and Olivia Wallin 15:48 into the frame to put Penn State ahead 2-1.
  • Quinnipiac answered late into the third period off a goal by Kate Reilly to send the game into overtime, 13:16 into the period.
  • After two scoreless overtimes, Madison Chantler squeaked a goal passed Josie Bothun to capture the 3-2 victory.

GOALTENDING

  • Goalie Josie Bothun allowed just three goals on 58 shots attempted and finished her 2022-23 season with a record of 26-9-1. She tallied a career-high 55 saves on the day. 

STATS AND NOTES

  • The game was the second longest NCAA women's hockey tournament game in history and was the third longest single game in collegiate women's hockey history.
  • Josie Bothun tallied a career-high 55 saves.
  • Kiara Zanon scored the first ever goal in an NCAA tournament for Penn State.
  • The Nittany Lions conclude their season with a 27-9-2 overall record.
  • Zanon finished her season leading the team in points with 49 and in goals with 26.
  • This is the Nittany Lions first loss since November 25, 2022, snapping an 18-game unbeaten streak.
