2023 Rutherford Intercollegiate Final Results
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's golf team put together a stellar surge down the stretch to overcome a seven-stroke deficit and claim the 2023 Rutherford Intercollegiate championship on a beautiful Sunday at the Penn State Blue Course.
The Nittany Lions collect their eighth-straight and 30th overall Rutherford Intercollegiate team title in the 46-year history of the event. Penn State was five strokes behind Valparaiso entering Sunday's third and final round. The Valpo lead reached as much as seven strokes in the front half of Sunday's round, but the Nittany Lions finished strong, shooting a 2-under, 282, Sunday compared to Valparaiso's 4-over, 288.
Penn State finished the tournament at 3-under, 849. Valpariaso was second at 2-under, 850, while Georgetown was third at 1-over, 853. The Nittany Lions' 849 is the third-best team score in the Rutherford when playing with the 7,171-yard course layout.
The tournament win marked a special milestone for head coach Greg Nye as he collected his 75th tournament championship at Penn State. The longest-tenured coach in program history, Nye secured his 22nd Rutherford Intercollegiate title as the leader of the Nittany Lions.
Junior James Allen was Penn State's highest finisher, placing tied for fourth at 4-under, 209. He shot a stellar 3-under, 68, in Sunday's final round to help lead the Nittany Lions to the team title.
Senior Jimmy Meyers also carded a 3-under, 68, Sunday to help guide Penn State to victory. Meyers finished tied for sixth at 2-under, 211, to collect his first top-10 finish of the season.
Sophomore Jake Griffin secured his third top-10 finish of the year as he tied for 10th place at 2-over, 213. Griffin shot a 2-over, 73, in Sunday's final round.
Senior Patrick Sheehan shot a 5-over, 76, Sunday and finished tied for 28th at 6-over, 219. Freshman Billy Pabst Jr. fired his best round Sunday, a 2-over, 73, and placed tied for 39th at 8-over, 221.
Freshman Jack Zubkus led Penn State's three Nittany Lions playing as individuals, as Zubkus shot an even 71 Sunday to finish tied for 28th at 6-over, 219. Junior Jud Langille tied for 39th at 8-over, 221, while sophomore Morgan Lofland placed tied for 46th at 10-over, 223.
The Nittany Lions return to action next weekend at Ohio State's three-day Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio. Action begins Friday and continues through Sunday.
