SAN JOSE, Calif.- Penn State men's gymnastics sees success at the first day of competition at the Xfinity U.S. Championships at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. Five current gymnasts competed with three finishing in the top-20 in the all-around, as well as Stephen Nedoroscik taking first on pommel horse.
"It was an excellent effort today from all our guys," said head coach Randy Jepson. "Karnes led the way finishing in 12th place but, it was questionable as to whether he would even compete today due to a back issue. He dug down deep and found a way. Michael Artlip had a very solid day as well finishing 16th in the all-around. Matt Cormier was only able to compete on pommel horse due to a lingering knee injury. Michael Jaroh went six-for-six in his first competitive all-around since February while freshman Landon Simpson was also solid in his all-around effort. I am looking forward to seeing them go to battle again on day two on Saturday."
Senior National Team member Karnes had a gritty 12th place finish in the all-around with a 82.452 mark. The junior earned one, top-10 performance and four, top-15 finishes. His 13.550 on high bar marked his best finish of the day in sixth place with other high scores on floor (14.050), vault (14.152) and parallel bars (14.350).
Artlip earned 16th place in the all-around with his score of 79.150. His best finish of the day also came on high bar (13.100). Jaroh was right behund him finishing 19th with an all-around scire of 78.300. Top finishes on high bar (13.100) and rings (13.550) earned him the finish. Freshman Simpson had an impressive showing for his first appearance at the senior level at U.S. Championships.
2020 alumni Nedoroscik took first on pommel horse with his score of 15.457.
The six gymnasts return to the floor on Saturday, August 26 for the second day of competition.
