BOSTON - Two goals in the third period secured the 11th-ranked Penn State women's ice hockey team's first win of the season as they defeated fifth-ranked Northeastern 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northeastern struck first in the opening period with a goal by Lily Shannon with 1:57 remaining in the period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
- After a scoreless second period, junior Leah Stecker scored Penn State's first goal of the season off feeds by Julie Gough and Tessa Janecke to even the score at 1-1 with 13:52 remaining in the third period.
- Eight minutes later, Alyssa Machado found the open lane to fire her first goal of the season with 5:23 left in the game off a pair of passes by Mya Vaslet and Maggie MacEachern to secure the 2-1 victory.
GOALTENDERS
- Senior goalie Josie Bothun stopped 29 shots on 30 attempted as she evened her record to 1-1 on the season.
STATS AND NOTES
- This is Penn State's first win against Northeastern in program history.
- Penn State picked up its 10th win against a ranked opponent.
- Leah Stecker scored her second career goal.
- The Nittany Lions last win against a top five ranked team came against second-ranked Wisconsin on Sept. 22, 2022.
