No. 15 Women's Hockey Opens CHA Play With 4-2 Victory Over Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The No. 15/15 Penn State women's ice hockey team captured the opening game of CHA play at Syracuse with a 4-2 victory on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • After a scoreless first period, Julie Gough scored her first goal of the season off feeds by Carrie Byrnes and Tessa Janecke 3:11 into the second period to put Penn State ahead 1-0.
  • 11:59 into the frame, Leah Stecker added to the Penn State lead with her second goal of the season to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead.
  • Syracuse scored their first goal of the game 2:37 into the third period to narrow the Penn State lead to 2-1.
  • The Nittany Lions answered 6:41 into the period as Kendall Butze scored her first goal of the season while Penn State was short-handed to increase Penn State's lead to 3-1.
  • Syracuse didn't back down as Darci Johal scored on the power-play to cut the Penn State lead to 3-2 with 41 seconds left to play in the game.
  • Butze had the final say as she scored an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining in the third frame to secure the 4-2 victory. 

GOALTENDERS

  • Senior goalie Josie Bothun recorded 20 saves and allowed two goals to move her record to 2-6-1 on the year.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Kendall Butze tallied her first multi-goal game in her career.
  • Head coach Jeff Kampersal secured his 99th win at Penn State.
  • Maeve Connolly played in her 100th game as a Nittany Lion.
  • Penn State picked up their fifth straight victory over the Orange.
