UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's swimming and diving sweep the first Big Ten weekly honors after their opening weekend win against St. Bonaventure
Cat Stanford captured Swimmer of the Week, Morgan Jenny earned Freshman of the Week and Abbey Ekstrom is the Diver of the Week as announced by the conference Wednesday afternoon.
Stanford, who is in her senior season, was awarded Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after an outstanding opening meet.
She had her hand in several events, winning the 200 free and 100 free while also being a part of the winning 200 medley team and 400 freestyle team.
Stanford is looking to build upon an impressive 2022-23 campaign in which she was highly competitive at the Big Ten Championships.
Big Ten Freshman of the Week, Jenny, propelled her way to an excellent collegiate debut, winning the 1000 free in a blazing fast 10:29.74. She also touched the wall second in the 200 breaststroke.
Jenny's strong start was not the only by the freshman class for the Nittany Lions. Ekstrom was also able to secure Big Ten Diver of the Week honors.
Ekstrom won both the one and three-meter dives for the Nittany Lions with respective scores of 241.68 and 303.83 against the Bonnies.
This marks the first time that two Penn State freshmen won weekly honors following their first collegiate meet.
This marks the first time in program history that the Nittany Lions have swept the weekly Big Ten awards.
Penn State continues their home stand to kickoff the 2023-24 season this Saturday against Navy in McCoy Natatorium at 11 a.m.
