Women’s Hockey Returns Home to Host Robert Morris

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's ice hockey team returns to Pegula Ice Arena this Friday and Saturday against Robert Morris after a long stretch of 12 games on the road. This will be their fourth conference opponent of the 2023-24 season.

SCOUTING THE COLONIALS

  • Robert Morris is currently 7-9-0 overall and 4-2-0 in CHA play. The Colonials are coming off a pair of losses to Boston University and Minnesota State on Nov. 24-25 where they fell 3-1 and 5-1.
  • Leading the team on offense is Alaina Giampietro who has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. In net stands Maggie Hatch who has started in eight games and records a GAA of 3.30 and save percentage of .919. She currently holds a record of 4-4-0.

NITTANY LIONS SWEEP CHA WEEKLY AWARDS

  • The Nittany Lions earned all four weekly awards from the CHA after their impressive performance against Dartmouth last weekend.
  • Tessa Janecke was named the Forward of the Week after recording 10 points (four goals, six assists) throughout the weekend and recording her second career hat trick in Saturday's game. Janecke also broke the program's record for most points in a single game with seven (three goals, four assists) and tied the CHA record for most points in a single game.
  • Maggie MacEachern received her third CHA weekly award of the season as the Defensive Player of the Week. MacEachern scored one goal and three assists throughout the weekend and recorded one blocked shot.
  • Stella Retrum also captured her third CHA weekly award of the season as the Rookie of the Week. Retrum scored her first career hat trick contributing to the 8-2 victory on Saturday and recorded seven points throughout the weekend (three goals, four assists). Retrum is currently second on the team for points on the season with 13 (six goals, seven assists).
  • Goaltender Annie Spring earned the CHA Goaltender of the Week award after securing her first two collegiate victories last weekend. Spring came into the game on Friday and held Dartmouth to only one goal scored, then made her first collegiate start on Saturday where she recorded 26 saves and only allowed two goals. Throughout the weekend, she recorded a GAA of 1.88 and save percentage of .923. 

PENN STATE TIES RECORD WITH TWO HAT TRICKS IN ONE GAME

  • Forwards Tessa Janecke and Stella Retrum both recorded a hat trick to contribute to Saturday's 8-2 win against Dartmouth.
  • This was Retrum's first career hat trick and Janecke's second.
  • The double hat-trick was the second time in Penn State women's ice hockey history.
  • The last time this occurred was on Oct. 7, 2016, when Laura Bowman and Amy Petersen scored three goals at Union.

HISTORY  

  • Penn State is facing Robert Morris for the 39th time in program history as the Colonials lead the series 23-8-7.
  • The last meeting between Penn State and Robert Morris took place on Feb. 6, 2021, when the Nittany Lions defeated the Colonials 4-2 in the CHA Tournament held in Buffalo, N.Y.
