No. 15/15 Women's Hockey Opens 2024 Against Union

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 15 Penn State women's ice hockey team begins the new year with a non-conference series against Union at Pegula Ice Arena. The series begins on Friday, January 5 at 6 p.m.

SCOUTING THE GARNET CHARGERS

  • Union is currently 7-12-2 overall and 3-7-2 in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) play.
  • Leading the Garnet Chargers on offense is Riley Walsh who has recorded nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points this season.
  • In between the pipes is Sophie Matsoukas with a .901 save percentage with 445 saves this season.
  • Union is coming off a 6-0 shutout victory over Saint Michael's that came on January 1.

SERIES HISTORY

  • This will be the 15th meeting between Penn State and Union. 
  • Penn State currently leads the series 8-4-2 with their last meeting on October 12-13, 2018 when Penn State defeated the Garnet Chargers 3-1 and 3-2. 

BOTHUN TIES CHA RECORD IN SHUTOUT WINS

  • Penn State's shutout victory over Robert Morris on Dec. 2 was the first this season for senior goaltender Josie Bothun making 16 saves.
  • Bothun is now tied with the CHA record for most shutouts by a goaltender with 19.
  • Penn State is now 7-1-0 in CHA play this season.

JANECKE LEADS NATION IN FACEOFF WINS

  • Sophomore forward Tessa Janecke is number in Division I women's hockey faceoff wins.
  • Janecke has won 356 faceoffs over 20 games this season.

ENDING 2023 WITH MONTHLY HONORS

  • Penn State captured two College Hockey America monthly awards. Tessa Janecke and Josie Bothun each captured a monthly award honor for the month of December.
  • Janecke who was named Forward of the Month, tallied three goals and two assists in the month of December with one of the goals coming short-handed on Dec. 1 against Robert Morris.
  • She also recorded 81 faceoff wins which led the team.
  • On the year, Janecke tallies eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points.
  • She also leads the nation in faceoff wins with 356.
  • This is the Orangeville, Ill. second straight CHA Forward of the Month honor.  
  • Bothun earns her second CHA Goaltender of the Month honor after going 3-1-0 in net last month while registering a GAA of 1.26 and save percentage of .954.
  • She recorded a total of 104 saves which featured 16 in her first shutout victory of the season against Robert Morris on Dec. 1.
  • On the year, Bothun registers a record of 9-8-1 with a GAA of 2.40 and save percentage of .910.


KAMPERSAL IN TOP 10 WINNINGEST COACHES

  • Head coach Jeff Kampersal is now the fifth winningest women's ice hockey coach of all time.
  • Kampersal has won 435 games as head coaches at Penn State (2017-present) and Princeton (1996-2017).

  • Parking for Penn State women's ice hockey games at Pegula Ice Arena will be available at the following locations beginning two hours prior to the start of each game: 
  • Stadium West, Jordan East, Porter North 
  • ONLY Stadium West will be available for parking on Saturday due to student arrival starting at 10:00 AM.
  • No charge with a valid Penn State parking pass

  • $10 day-of-event without a valid permit or prepayment (pay station or ParkMobile app – zone no. 95112) 
  • ParkMobile prepayment availability ends at 11:59 p.m. the night before each event. Events will not be selectable on the site after that time, and payment must then be made on site upon arrival to event parking staff (cash only).
