UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State baseball junior catcher Matt Maloney was selected Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday. Maloney was a major contributor to the Nittany Lions' three wins on opening weekend.
Maloney earns his first career Big Ten Player of the Week honor after making his Penn State debut over the weekend.
The New Hampshire native batted .625 (5-of-8) with one home run, 11 RBI and three runs while posting a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage.
In Friday's 6-5 win over Monmouth, Maloney went two-for-three with a run and four RBI. He hit a two-run single in the fourth and tied the game with a two-run single in the ninth. He also scored a game-tying run in the 10th.
On Saturday, the Nittany Lions earned a 4-3 win over Army behind Maloney's two-hit, three-RBI day. He recorded a two-run single in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth.
In Sunday's 12-4 win over Army, Maloney tallied a homer, four RBI and two runs. He crushed a two-run blast to right in the third and added a sac fly in the first and an RBI groundout in the seventh.
Following the first weekend of the season, Maloney leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth in the country with 11 RBI. He also ranks second in the conference and 25th in the nation with a .625 average.
Penn State, led by head coach Mike Gambino, is 3-1 heading into this weekend's series at Stanford. The Nittany Lions take on the Cardinal at 5:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 4:05 p.m. on Sunday.
