LAST TIME OUT
Josh Karnes was named to the U.S. Men's Senior National Team after his performance at the 2024 Winter Cup in Louisville, Ky after finishing ninth overall in the all-around with a score of 160.500. Karnes also scored a 14.200 on floor to help him take home the silver medal in the event.
 
Men's gymnastics posted a season high score in a 407.500-399.300 win against No. 6 Ohio State, their first head-to-head victory against the Buckeyes since 2020. The Nittany Lions earned season best team scores on pommel horse (66.800) and parallel bars (70.200). The team swept the top-four scores on pommel horse to take the event with Ethan Dick earning his first career pommel horse event win, scoring a season high of 13.150.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Springfield is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation with an average score of 380.860. Their record currently sits at 1-1 after winning their last meet against William and Mary 397.850-385.050.
 
Peyton Cramer currently sits at fifth in the nation on pommel horse with a season average score of 13.925 and Sam Kaplan is seventh in the nation in the all-around with a season average score of 75.380. 
 
MEETING HISTORY 
In their last match up in March of 2022, Penn State won handily 395.300-378.700. The Nittany Lions won all six individual events with Michael Jaroh posting a pair of individual event wins, taking first on pommel horse and parallel bars. Michael Artlip won high bar with a personal-best score of 13.95 and Matt Cormier earned a personal-best 14.7 on vault. 
 
Penn State is 23-3 all-time against the Pride.
 
2024 SEASON PREVIEW 
The Nittany Lions enter their 2024 campaign ranked sixth in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Preseason Coaches Poll.  
 
Head coach Randy Jepson returns for his 33rd season at the helm of the program along with associate head coach Tony Beck (eighth season) and assistant coach Carlos Vazquez (11th season).
 
Penn State finished their 2023 season 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten. The team has 13 returners including All-Americas Josh Karnes, Matt Cormier, Michael Jaroh and Matt Underhill. Karnes was named the CGA All-Star Competition MVP last month after being named the parallel bars champion and helping the East team win for the second year in a row.  Karnes along with sophomore Ian Raubal were named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch after stellar regular and offs seasons.  
 
The team has four new faces. Freshman Bobby Alessio, Luke Esparo, Akseli Karsikas and Landon Simpson will make their collegiate debuts this season.
