UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 4 Penn State men's lacrosse team fell to No. 12 Maryland 13-11 on Sunday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State would start the scoring off a goal by Jake Morin just 40 seconds into the game.
- Maryland countered with 11:22 remaining in the first quarter off a goal by Eric Malever to even the score at 1-1.
- Mac Costin and Will Peden would score back-to-back goals to give the Nittany Lions a 3-1 lead with 8:28 remaining in the quarter.
- After Maryland added one goal with 7:55 left, the Nittany Lions fired three unanswered goals which featured two by TJ Malone and one by Matt Traynor to put the Nittany Lions ahead 6-2 after the first quarter.
- Malone continued his scoring to open the second quarter with a goal coming with 14:07 remaining in the half to put the Nittany Lions ahead 7-2.
- Maryland's Jake Koras then answered with 13:47 left to cut the Nittany Lion lead to 7-3.
- Luke Walstrum would score his first goal of the game shortly after with 13:04 remaining to increase Penn State's lead to 8-3.
- The Terrapins responded with a goal by Braden Erksa with 9:17 left in the second quarter and closed the half with Penn State ahead 8-4.
- Maryland fired two unanswered goals to open the second half to cut the Penn State lead to 8-6 with 12:02 remaining in the third quarter.
- Grant Haus then fired his second goal of the season with 10:21 left in the third quarter to give Penn State a 9-6 lead.
- Both sides each fired one more goal in the quarter giving Penn State a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth.
- Maryland scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to give the Terrapins a three-goal lead with 6:19 remaining in regulation.
- Penn State only scored once in the fourth quarter off a goal by Walstrum to result in the 13-11 loss.
GOALTENDER
- Jack Fracyon made 16 saves on 29 shots attempted while his record dropped to 7-2 on the year.
STATS AND NOTES
- The loss is the first loss the Nittany Lions have had since the opening game of the year on February 3 against Colgate.
- This is Maryland's fifth straight win against the Nittany Lions.
- TJ Malone tallied his eighth four point or more game this season with a hat-trick and one assist.
- Matt Traynor increased his goal streak to nine on the year.
- Penn State drops to 1-1 in Big Ten play and 7-2 overall.
