UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 22 Penn State women's lacrosse lost to Big Ten opponent No. 5 Michigan, 10-15 at Panzer on Saturday afternoon.
Penn State moves their record to 7-6 (2-2 Big Ten) while Michigan improves to 13-1 (3-1 Big Ten).
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – Penn State 1, Michigan 5
Annabelle Burke opened scoring less than a minute into the game for the Wolverines with an unassisted goal, which was then followed up by a free position goal from Josie Gooch as well as a goal by Caroline Davis halfway through the quarter to extend Michigan's lead.
Kaylee Dyer and Jane Fetterolf scored Michigan's next two goals with 4:25 left to go in the quarter.
With :23 seconds left in the first quarter Brooke Hoss scored the Nittany Lion's first goal of the game.
Second Quarter – Penn State 5, Michigan 10
The Wolverine's Dyer scored her second of the game two minutes into the quarter, however, Hoss scored her second of the game off a free position shot less than a minute later.
Dyer and Julia Schwabe both scored off free position shots, for Michigan within a span of minutes with 8:23 to go.
Hoss scored her third goal of the game, her second free position shot of the game, her eighth hattrick of her career.
Ava Class scored for Michigan with 6:22 left in the quarter to extend the lead for Michigan, but Emma Kelly responded for Penn State, scoring her first goal of the game soon after.
Kristin O'Neill scored an unassisted goal, her first goal of the game, with 4:11 left in the quarter to help continue closing in on the Wolverines.
Katharine Merrifield came back with a goal for Michigan with less than two minutes to go.
Third Quarter – Penn State 6, Michigan 12
The Wolverines extended their lead with a goal by Dryer six minutes into the quarter.
With 4:13 left in the quarter, Kayla Abernathy scored an unassisted goal, her first goal of the game.
Jill Smith scored her first goal of the game for Michigan less than two minutes later.
Fourth Quarter – Penn State 10, Michigan 15
O'Neill started off the fourth quarter with a free position goal, her second goal of the game, which was followed up with a goal by a goal from Abernathy, her second of the game, 30 seconds later.
Merrifield scored her second goal of the game with 12:09 left in the quarter, which was then followed by a free position goal from Burke.
Class then scored her second goal of the game for the Wolverines off of an assist from Jane Fetterolf.
With 5:20 to go in the quarter, O'Neill scored her third goal of the game to give her a hat trick, from a Kelly MacKinney assist. She then followed that up with a free position goal with less than a minute to go, with her fourth goal of the game.
GAME NOTES
>> The Nittany Lions had four different goal scorers, with Kristin O'Neill and Brooke Hoss leading the way each with a hat trick, with O'Neill scoring four. Kayla Abernathy scored two goals, while Emma Kelly notched one to contribute to the scoring efforts.
>> O'Neill is now 10 points away from 200 in her career.
>> With two goals against Michigan, Abernathy is now at 50 points her career. She is also 15 draws away from 200 in her career.
>> Michigan held the advantage in shots, 29-25.
