UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State baseball freshman pitcher Mason Horwat was tabbed Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday. Horwat helped Penn State to a three-game sweep over Maryland to clinch a spot in the Big Ten Tournament.
Horwat collected his first career Big Ten weekly honor.
He worked seven shutout innings over two games in the series as Penn State swept Maryland.
On Thursday, the Pittsburgh native entered the game in the sixth inning and fired four shutout frames, allowing two hits and striking out one. He worked 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to earn the save in the 8-4 victory.
In Friday's first game, Horwat closed out the game with three scoreless innings. He picked up the win after giving up one hit and two walks, while recording one strikeout. Five of his nine outs came on the ground. The Nittany Lions won 6-5 in 10 innings.
On the season, Horwat is 4-1 with two saves and a 4.35 ERA in 51.2 innings. In Big Ten play, he owns a 2-1 mark with a 4.05 ERA in 12 appearances (1 start) and 33.1 innings.
Penn State, in its first season under head coach Mike Gambino, finished the regular season with a 26-23 overall record and a 12-12 mark in Big Ten play.
The Nittany Lions posted their first winning record since 2016 and maintained a .500 or better mark for the entire season for the first time since 2011.
Penn State opens the Big Ten Tournament Presented by IFS.ai on Tuesday against top-seed Illinois at 7 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network and the FOX Sports app. The tournament is being played at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.
