UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Nittany Lion field hockey team (0-0, 0-0 B1G), under the guidance of head coach Lisa Bervinchak Love, opens up the 2024 season ranked No. 16 nationally, beginning the campaign wtih two home games against ACC foes. Penn State begins the campaign on Friday, hosting No. 3 Virginia (0-0) at 4 p.m. Two days later, the Lions welcome No. 10 Syracuse (0-0*) to Happy Valley for a 12 p.m. contest. *Syracuse is at Lock Haven on Friday, Aug. 30, as well.

The Nittany Lions are coming off a 9-8 season in 2023, going 4-4 in Big Ten play. Senior+ Phia Gladieux returns for a fifth year after leading Penn State in scoring with 45 points a year ago. Gladieux recently returned to Happy Valley after representing the United States as part of Team USA’s Olympic field hockey team in Paris.

Gladieux will be joined by fellow team captains Julia Lamb and Drew Taylor and senior goalie Lauren Delgado. Penn State features a number of key returning letterwinners who played in all (or most games a year ago): Elle Jennes, Aubrey Semler, Gery Schnarrs, Natalie Freeman, Sophia Mannino, Morgan McMenamin, Julienne van Bekkum and Madison Tambroni.

Virginia comes in off a 14-7 season, going 3-3 in the ACC a year ago. The Cavaliers won last year’s meeting against Penn State, winning 2-1 in Virginia. Penn State leads the all-time series 21-9.

Syracuse went 11-8 a season ago, 2-4 in ACC action. The Orange posted a 2-1 win over Penn State last year in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions have a 24-6 edge in the all-time series.

Penn State hits the road for two games next weekend, visiting St. Joseph’s for a 3 p.m. game on Friday, Sept., 6. The Nittany Lions then trek to the University of Delaware for a 12 p.m. game on Sunday, Sept. 8.

• Gates open 1 hour prior to game time 
• The Field Hockey Complex is not a clear bag facility, however, bags 
brought into the facility will be checked upon entrance
• Outside food and beverages are prohibited. Concessions will be avail
able for purchase  
• Pets, except for service animals, are prohibited from inside the stadium.

Sophia Gladieux, Drew Taylor and Sophia Mannino were named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list, released by the conference prior to the start of the 2024 season.
 
PENN STATE BEGINS SEASON RANKED
#16 IN NFHCA COACHES POLL
Penn State began the 2024 season ranked No. 24 in the NFHCA Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Aug. 27. Big Ten teams Northwestern (1), Maryland (4), Iowa (6), Rutgers (9), Michigan (12), and Ohio State (14) were also ranked in the preseason poll.
 
SENIOR TRIO NAMED 2024 TEAM CAPTAINS
The Penn State Nittany Lion field hockey team voted seniors Phia Gladieux, Julia Lamb and Drew Taylor as team captains during the second week of preseason practice. This marks the first time each of these Nittany Lions has been voted captain by her teammates.
