Women’s Tennis’ Uchijima Named Big Ten Player of the Week

Uchijima earned victories in five matches at the UNC Kitty Harrison Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women’s tennis junior Maiko Uchijima was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Wednesday. Uchijima won three doubles and two singles matches over the weekend at the UNC Kitty Harrison Invitational.  

Uchijima, alongside Olivia Dorner, swept doubles competition in Chapel Hill. The No. 49 ranked doubles tandem in the ITA preseason rankings defeated Duke’s No. 61 Shavit Kimchi/Ellie Coleman (6-3), Charlotte’s Sara Suchankova/Shona Nakano (6-3) and Purdue’s Carmen Gallardo/Tara Milic (6-1).  

In singles play, Uchijima collected wins over Charlotte’s Ni Xi (6-1, 6-3) and Purdue’s Carmen Gallardo (6-3, 7-6). 

Uchijima and Dorner look to carry their momentum to the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina beginning on Monday, Sept. 23.
