UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's tennis junior Olivia Dorner was announced as Co-Big Ten Player of the Week on Wednesday afternoon, sharing the honor with Ohio State’s Luciana Perry. Dorner and Maiko Uchijima, ranked as the No. 49 doubles pair in the country, went a perfect 6-0 to earn the doubles title at the ITA Northeast Regional. Dorner added two singles wins en route to a Round of 16 finish at the competition.
The tandem became women's tennis' first student-athletes, in singles or doubles, to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships and win a regional event since 2012.
In doubles play, Dorner and Uchijima defeated Penn’s Eileen Wang and Sabine Rutlauka (1-6, 6-4, 10-7) to claim the title. Additionally, they defeated Seton Hall’s Rachel Benoualid and Isabelle May (8-3), Fordham’s Lilianna Chitambar and Lorraine Bergmann (8-4), Princeton’s Pearlie Zhang and Isabella Chhiv (8-1) and Penn’s Gavriella Smith and Saige Roshkoff (8-0) and Esha Velaga and Lara Stojanovski (6-2, 6-3).
On the singles side, Dorner bested Fordham’s Chitambar (6-1, 6-2) and Mercyhurst’s Kayla Dean (6-1, 3-6, 6-1).
On the season, Dorner and Uchijima are now 10-1 in doubles, while Dorner also owns four singles victories.
