UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 11/12 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (11-3-0) completed the sweep over the Lindenwood Lions (2-11-1) with a dominant 7-1 victory on Saturday afternoon. Kendall Butze tallied a career-high six points off five assists and a goal in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Nittany Lions got on the board first with a Maddy Christian goal in front of the net, assisted by Butze at 15:40 of the first period.
- Grace Outwater built on the lead at 5:12 of the second period, scoring off assists from Brianna Brooks and Butze to give Penn State a 2-0 lead.
- Lindenwood responded on the power play at 7:35 of the second period, with Josey Dunne finding the back of the net to narrow the score to 2-1.
- Tessa Janecke notched her seventh goal of the season at 10:14 of the second period from in front of the net, with assists from Butze and Stella Retrum to put the Nittany Lions ahead 3-1.
- Katelyn Roberts scored her fifth goal of the season at 14:17 of the second period, firing from the rear center of the attack zone with assists from Butze and Karley Garcia to expand the Penn State lead to 4-1.
- The Nittany Lions capitalized on a power play as Janecke netted her second goal of the game at 16:38 of the second period with assists from Butze and Roberts to give Penn State a comfortable 5-1 advantage.
- The Nittany Lions added to their lead with a power play goal by Butze at 3:34 of the final period, her second of the season, assisted by Roberts and Garcia to take a commanding 6-1 lead.
- Retrum then scored her fifth goal of the season at 11:47 of the third period, finding the back of the net by tipping it in front of the net off an assist from Janecke, to seal the 7-1 victory.
GOALTENDERS
- Junior Katie DeSa had a strong performance, stopping 17 of 18 shots faced from the Lions, earning a .944 save percentage. DeSa’s record improves to 8-3-0 on the year.
- Lindenwood's Anna LaRose started in net, playing 27 minutes and saving 25 shots for a while allowing five goals. Madison Bowtell replaced LaRose for the remainder of the game, allowing two goals with 13 saves. LaRose’s record dropped to 1-8-0 on the season.
STATS AND NOTES
- The Nittany Lions secured their 11th win of the season, improving to 11-3-0, and extending their best start through 14 games since 2020.
- Penn State now holds a 34-10-6 advantage in the all-time series against Lindenwood.
- The Nittany Lions out-shot Lindenwood by a wide margin 45-18.
- The win is the fourteenth consecutive victory for Penn State over Lindenwood.
- This is the fifth time in program history the Nittany Lions have scored at least seven goals against Lindenwood.
- Butze’s five assists sits tied for the most assists in a single game in program history. Her six points places her tied for second with the most points in a single game with six on the day.
- Penn State had six different goal scorers in the game. The last time this occurred was on January 6, 2024, against Union.
- Janecke’s three points on the day placed her with 120 career points which sits second all-time in program history behind Natalie Heising who had 137 points from 2017-22.
- Brooks's assist marked her 94th career point.
