No. 12 Women's Hockey Sweeps Robert Morris with 4-0, Shutout Win

First back-to-back shutouts since the 2022-23 season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.–The No. 12 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (13-3-0, 6-0-0 AHA) completed the sweep of Robert Morris (5-10-1, 0-5-1 AHA) with a 4-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. Junior goalie Katie DeSa captured her third shutout tally of the season in the win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Alyssa Machado received a feed from Grace Tullock from the blue line and Machado tipped the puck past the netminder to give Penn State a 1-0 lead with 13:26 remaining in the first period.
  • In the second frame, Kendall Butze ripped a goal from the offensive slot off a pass from Katelyn Roberts on the left side to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead with 12:03 left in the frame.
  • During the middle of the third period, Grace Outwater took the puck off a pass from Maddy Christian in the left circle. Outwater then potted a goal from the slot to give Penn State a commanding 3-0 lead.
  • In the closing minutes of the game, Tessa Janecke glided away from the Robert Morris defenders as she went down to the opposite end of the ice and tapped the puck into the net to secure the 4-0 victory with 1:11 left in the game. 

GOALTENDERS

  • Junior Katie DeSa captured her third shutout victory of the season after stopping 25 shots attempted at her. Her record improves to 10-3-0 this year. 
  • Robert Morris goalie Maggie Hatch registered 45 saves on 49 shots. Her record drops to 4-5-1 on the year.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Penn State captured their seventh straight win of the season to improve their record to 13-3-0 overall and 6-0-0 in AHA play. Their overall record sits second in program history for the most wins through 16 games. 
  • The Nittany Lions have gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 matches against the Colonials. 
  • This is the fourth shutout victory over Robert Morris in program history. 
  • Tullock tallied her first collegiate point with an assist on the Machado goal.
  • Penn State last recorded back-to-back shutout wins came in the 2022-23 season. They defeated Boston University 3-0 on November 26, 2022, followed by Syracuse on December 3, 2022, by a score of 4-0. 
  • The Nittany Lions last had shutout victories in both games of a series on December 9-10, 2021, when they defeated New Hampshire 3-0 in game one and 3-0 in game two.  Tullock tallied her first collegiate point with an assist on the Machado goal.
  • DeSa recorded her seventh career shutout victory, which places her in third place in program history in career shutouts. Janecke sits at 123 points with her goal and one assist today. She sits 14 points behind the all-time leader in Natalie Heising with 137. Janecke ranks ninth in the nation in points this season with 23. 
  • Penn State outshot Robert Morris 49-24. The Nittany Lions have outshot their opponents in every game this season.
