Katie DeSa picked up her seventh career shutout victory

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.–The No. 11 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (18-4-1, 9-0-0 AHA) defeated RIT (11-9-3, 4-4-1 AHA), 3-0 in the opening game of the series on Friday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Abby Stonehouse tipped the puck into the net off feeds by McKenna Walsh and Tessa Janecke in the slot to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead with 11:11 left in the first period. 
  • Kendall Butze sent a feed in the defensive zone to Brianna Brooks. Brooks then moved the puck up ice and passed the puck to Katelyn Roberts. Roberts then fed the puck back to Brooks in the slot and she fired the puck into the net to put Penn State ahead 2-0 with 19:14 remaining in the second frame. 
  • Lyndie Lobdell ripped a pass to Brooks in the slot and she then fired the puck into the net to put Penn State ahead 3-0 with 10:53 left in the third period.

GOALTENDERS

  • Junior goalie Katie DeSa tallied 18 saves on the day. Her record improves to 15-4-0 on the year. 
  • RIT goalie Sarah Coe recorded 45 saves on 48 shots attempted. Her record drops to 6-5-1 on the year.

STATS AND NOTES

  • DeSa captured her fourth shutout win of the year and seventh of her career. 
  • The Nittany Lions picked up their fifth straight win of the season.
  • Janecke (136) is now one point away from tying the all-time career point leader in Natalie Heising (137).
  • Brooks registered her second multi-goal game of the year. 
  • This is the nineteenth time in program history Penn State has shutout RIT. 
  • Penn State fired 48 shots in the game, which is the eighth time this season Penn State has tallied 40 shots or more in a game. 
  • The Nittany Lions outshot RIT 48-18.
