5-1 Penn State set to open Big Ten dual slate in Minneapolis

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — No. 16 Penn State women’s gymnastics (5-1, 0-0 Big Ten) will open its 2025 Big Ten conference slate against No. 21 Minnesota (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) in Minneapolis this Saturday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

The Nittany Lions continued their strong opening to the season at the Lone Star Collegiate Invitational where they scored 196.100 to place second behind No. 7 Auburn. After two weekends of competition in the 2025 season, Penn State’s record stands at an outstanding 5-1.

Freshman Elizabeth Leary competed in her second all-around meet this season last time out in Texas. Leary went on to record a 39.000 score all-around, setting or tying her career-highs on vault, bars and floor in her second collegiate meet.

VAULT – No. 30

Penn State scored a 48.850 on vault in its most recent meet. The Nittany Lions were led by a pair of 9.8 totals from Jessica Johnson and Kalea McElligott. Maddie Johnston and Leary added a pair of 9.775 scores to contribute to the overall score at the Lone Star Collegiate Invitational.

BARS – No. 19

Heading into the third week of competition, Penn State ranks 19th in the country on bars after finishing with a 48.950 at the Lone Star Collegiate Invitational. Leary led the Nittany Lions with a career-high score of 9.85, the second-highest bars score in the meet. Dani Latronica finished behind Leary with a 9.825 in her collegiate debut.

BEAM – No. 14 

A 49.125 score on balance beam at the Lone Star Collegiate Invitational was led by a stellar 9.9 score from Amani Herring. Herring’s tally earned a share of the event title. Johnston finished behind Herring, earning a 9.85 score, followed by Latronica and Ashley Maul with a pair of 9.8 scores. 

FLOOR – No. 12

The Nittany Lions’ finished on floor and put up a 49.175, the team’s highest team total on any event so far this season. Johanson led the way with a season-best score of 9.875 with McElligott finishing behind Johanson with a 9.85. Herring and Maul finished behind McElligott with 9.825s while Leary earned a 9.8. It was the first event all season in which all of Penn State’s counted routines were 9.8-or-above.

WHAT’S NEXT

Following its Big Ten dual meet opener, the Nittany Lions will return to Rec Hall on Friday, Jan. 24 for a home dual with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 6 p.m.
