Smallwood, Desmeules, Ullom post top-five program marks

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State track & field team put together another strong outing to cap off the second day of competition at the Penn State National Open, hosted by the Nittany Lions in their Multi-Sport Facility & Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

Event-By-Event Summary

IN THE RECORD BOOKS

History was made in the men’s 600-meter run as both of Penn State’s top finishers ran phenomenal marks. Darius Smallwood’s 1:15.49 ranks as the tenth-fastest collegiate mark in history while Olivier Desmeules’ 1:15.59 broke the Canadian indoor record in the event. Both Smallwood and Desmeules improved their own top-five program marks with their runs.

Maddie Ullom delivered a 2:42.90 in the women’s 1K, a time that ranks third in Penn State history.

TRACK EVENT SUMMARY

Women’s 600-meter Run (unseeded)

  • Ashley Pines finished fifth with a time of 1:35.88, setting a new PR.

Women’s 200-meter Dash (unseeded)

  • Lauren Princz finished 13th place in 24.93 while Mimi Duffy finished in 15th place with a time of 24.99, setting a new PR.

Men’s Distance Medley Relay

  • Kevin Haas, Korbin Martino, Kaleb Nastari, and Jake Allen placed 2nd overall, with a time of 9:45.61.

Men’s 500-meter Dash

  • Freshman Jesufifunmi Olugbenga placed fourth overall, with a time of 1:04.18, setting a new PR.

Women’s 600-meter Dash Invite

  • Freshman Tayissa Buchanan finished in second place overall, with a time of 1:30.63.

Men’s 600-meter Dash Invite

  • Smallwood finished in second place overall, with a time of 1:15.49. Smallwood’s mark ranks as the tenth-fastest in collegiate history and the third-fastest in school history.
  • Desmeules set the Canadian indoor 600-meter record with a time of 1:15.59, a mark that ranks fifth in Penn State history.

Women’s 1000-meter Run

  • Maddie Ullom finished in second place overall, with a time of 2:42.90, setting a new PR and claiming No. 3 spot on Penn State’s all-time performance list.

Men’s 1000-meter Dash

  • David Locke finished in fifth place overall, with a time of 2:23.33.

Women’s 200-meter Dash Invite

  • Zoey Goldstein finished in second place in 24.06 while Meghan Quinn finished in fourth place, running a 24.37.

Men’s 200-Meter Dash Invite

  • Damoy Allen finished in first place overall with a time of 21.21.

Women’s 3000-meter Dash

  • Ada Rand finished in fourth place overall with a time of 9:16.53, setting a new PR.
  • Claire Zubey finished in sixth place overall with a time of 9:25.85, setting a new PR.
  • Sophia Toti finished in seventh place overall with a time of 9:26.50.
  • Claire Daniels finished in 11th place overall with a time of 9:32.06, setting a new PR.

Men’s 3000-meter Dash

  • Ryan Watson finished in third place overall with a time of 8:06.31.
  • Hayden Healey finished in eighth place overall with a time of 8:12.37, setting a new PR.
  • Caiden Leen finished in ninth place overall with a time of 8:12.47, setting a new PR.

Women’s 4x400 (unseeded)

  • Addyson White, Princz, Buchanan, and Quinn finished in third place, with a time of 3:46.58.
  • Harriet Healey, Ashley Pines, Dani Prunzik, and Mimi Duffy finished in eighth place with a time of 3:52.52.

Men’s 4x400 Invite

  • Jake Palermo, James Onwuka, Austin Gallant, and Max DeAngelo placed second overall, with a time of 3:07.97.

FIELD EVENT SUMMARY 

Women’s High Jump Invite

  • Hannah Riolo finished in fifth place overall with a 5-7 ¼ (1.71m) mark.
  • Gwen Cudmore finished in ninth place overall, clearing 5-6 (1.68m).

Men’s High Jump

  • Robert Allen finished in first place overall, with a 6-9 (2.06m) clearance.

Men’s Shot Put

  • Ryan Henry finished in second place with a 60-3 (18.36m) mark while Dylan Lambrecht finished third with a 58-1 (17.70m) heave.

Women’s Triple Jump

  • Lizzie Schreiber finished in third place with a 41-1 ½ (12.53m) best jump.

Men’s Triple Jump

  • Emi Erekosima finished in third place overall, with a 49-3 ¾ (15.03m) jump, his second-best mark of the season.

Women’s Pole Vault

  • Gabriella Recce finished in first place overall, with a 13-7 ¼ (4.15) mark that ranks just outside the Penn State top five list.

UP NEXT

The Nittany Lions will host the Sykes & Sabock Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 8, back in the Multi-Sport Facility and Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
