Fencing Takes Split Squad Weekend to Duke and UNC

The Nittany Lions will compete in a split-squad weekend for competitions at Duke and the University of North Carolina

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men’s and women’s fencing teams will take on a split-squad weekend into North Carolina. On Saturday, February 7, the men’s team will fence at Duke during the Beguinet Classic. Then on Sunday, February 8, the women’s team will compete at the University of North Carolina at the Miller Invitational.  

IN THE RANKINGS 

Entering the split squad weekend, the men’s team stays put at No. 7 in the NCAA men’s fencing rankings.  

COMPETITION SCHEDULE & LINEUP 

On Saturday at Duke during the Beguinet Classic, No. 7 Penn State will fence No. 9 New York University, No. 13 Air Force, No. 15 Brandeis University, No. 25 Johns Hopkins University, the University of North Carolina and Notre Dame. Bouts will start at 8:30 a.m. against No. 9 NYU.  

Fencing foil for the men at Duke is Matthew Gonzalez, Dusan Zeljkovic, Spencer Burke, Julian Chin, Alessio Fukuda and Yaroslav Muruhin 

Tingwei Xu, Sultan Hassan, Joshua Yavorovskiy, Sebastian Bonomo and Zachary Suico will fence epee for the men’s team.  

Representing the men’s saber team is Neil Lilov, Michael Nil and Tyson Deck 

The Penn State women’s team will compete at the Miller Invitational at UNC on Sunday. The Nittany Lions will compete against No. 9 Johns Hopkins University, No. 15 Boston College, No. 17 Notre Dame, No. 5 New York University and the University of North Carolina. Competition will kick off at 8 a.m. against No. 9 Johns Hopkins University.    

Eunyu Kim, Amelia Baker, Emma Holmes, Mia Novick and Eve Scott will fence saber for the women’s team.  

Fencing epee on the women’s team will be Allegra Cristofoletto, Sophia Abashidze, Lena Gyenes and Yuna Tamura 

Eden De La Cruz, Clarisse Tan and Thea Fernandes will fence foil for the women’s squad. 

LAST TIME ON THE STRIP 

The Nittany Lions competed at the Brian Palestis Memorial Invitational at Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y. on Sunday, February 1. Penn State fenced against ranked competition including No. 8 / No. 3 University of Pennsylvania and No. 17 / No. 22 Columbia University.    

Tingwei Xu completed the competition with a 5-4 record in men’s epee. Xu earned 2 wins against No. 8 UPenn with another win against No. 17 Columbia. Xu fenced 2-1 against the University of North Carolina. 

Mohamed Yassin fenced 7-5 overall for the men’s epee squad. Yassin had 2-1 performances against both No. 17 Columbia and Vassar College. An additional win from Yassin over No. 8 UPenn propelled the men’s epee team to a 6-3 victory for Penn State.  

Both men’s and women’s foil fenced undefeated against Vassar College. On the men’s squad, Alessio Fukuda, Spencer Burke and Tit Nam Cheng all fenced 3-0. Clarisse Tan, Thea Fernandes and Eden De La Cruz all earned 3-0 records as women’s foil fenced undefeated.
