Andra Thomas is the Associate Director of Athletic Training Services at Penn State University and is in her 29thth year as a member of the Sports Medicine staff at Penn State University.
Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Ferrum College in 1990 while a 3 sport letter winner and earned her master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Tennessee in 1992. Upon graduation, she joined the Penn State athletic training staff in the fall of 1992. During her time at Penn State, Thomas has worked with women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, and men’s soccer. Thomas currently provides medical care primarily to the women’s soccer team while supervising the staff responsible for the care of men’s and women’s gymnastics, fencing, cheer and dance, men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, wrestling, and softball. She is a consultant for teams on campus as well as many Division I programs in developing injury prevention programs.
Thomas is a member of several athletic training professional organizations and is a master’s level preceptor for the athletic training education program. In 2018-19, Thomas was awarded the Preceptor Excellence Award for her work with the athletic training education program. She is Graston M1 certified, is a Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation Specialist-Owens Recovery, and has special training in various manual therapy techniques such as cranial sacral therapy, lymphatic drainage, strain counterstrain, myofascial release, muscle energy, and zero balance to name just a few. Thomas also has special interest in reflexology and acupressure and was a presenter on these topics at the 2018 Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Society Symposium.
